What is GST Return?

A return is a document containing details of income which a taxpayer is required to file with the tax administrative authorities. This is used by tax authorities to calculate tax liability.
Under GST, a registered dealer has to file GST returns that include:
Purchases
Sales
Output GST (On sales)
Input tax credit (GST paid on purchases)

What are the different types of GST returns?

There are a total of 11 types of returns under the GST.

GSTR-1: monthly return for outward supplies
GSTR-2: monthly return for inward supplies
GSTR-3: monthly return containing details from other monthly returns filed by the taxpayer (GSTR-1, GSTR-2, GSTR-6, GSTR-7)
GSTR-4: quarterly return
GSTR-5: variable return to be filed by Non-Resident Taxpayers
GSTR-6: monthly return to be filed by input service distributors
GSTR-7: monthly return to be filed for Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) transactions
GSTR-8: monthly return to be filed by e-commerce operators
GSTR-9: annual return
GSTR-10: final return to be filed when terminating business activities permanently
GSTR-11: to be filed by taxpayers with a Unique Identity Number (UIN)

Who should file GST Returns?

In the GST regime, any regular business has to file two monthly returns and one annual return. This amounts to 26 returns in a year.
The beauty of the system is that one has to manually enter details of one monthly return – GSTR-1. The other return GSTR 3B will get auto-populated by deriving information from GSTR-1 filed by you and your vendors.
There are separate returns required to be filed by special cases such as composition dealers.

Late Fees for not Filing Return on Time?

If GST Returns are not filed within time, you will be liable to pay interest and a late fee.

Interest is 18% per annul. It has to be calculated by the taxpayer on the amount of outstanding tax to be paid. The time period will be from the next day of filing to the date of payment.
Late fee is Rs. 100 per day per Act. So it is 100 under CGST & 100 under SGST. Total will be Rs. 200/day. Maximum is Rs. 5,000. There is no late fee on IGST.

How many returns to be filed in GST?

How many GST returns are filed each year?

No. of GST Returns & the due dates: A tax return is a form which every taxpayer is required to file as per the governing law. As per GST rules, a taxpayer is required to furnish three returns on a monthly basis and one on annually which takes it to a total of 37 returns annually.

When can GSTR-2 be filed?

A notification in this regard is being issued shortly – to facilitate about 30.81 lakh taxpayers for filing GSTR-2 for month of July, 2017. The last date for filing of final sales returns for July in GSTR-1 form was October 10, while the date for uploading of purchase returns in GSTR-2 was kept at October 31.
